Originally a modest Provençal Mediterranean village of fishermen and monks, Cannes is now home to a film festival so prestigious and influential that the name is synonymous with the city. But there’s so much more to explore on a private Cannes city tour, far beyond the glitz and glamor of the festival.
Known since the 2nd century BC, Cannes remained a modest village in the Middle Ages. It was not until the nineteenth century that the town gained importance, thanks in particular to Henry Peter Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, who settled here and attracted the English and European aristocracy to spend the winter in the cozy climate of the Côte d'Azur. Soon, many others from the high society built their holiday houses. A new pearl was born and never forgotten again.
There is no tour of Cannes without visiting the famous Boulevard de la Croisette. The national historic building, now the InterContinental hotel is a marvelous example of grand French Art Nouveau architecture, designed by Charles Dalmas. This edifice with two seaward facing domes also held a prominent spot in Alfred Hitchcock`s ‘To catch a thief’ movie. Take a stroll along the boulevard and enjoy the beautiful Belle Epoque architecture, the opulent villas and upscale boutiques.
Our private Cannes city tour will also include Villa Rothschild and its romantic English gardens, that were built for the Baroness de Rothschild. Today, the villa hosts a public library.
The fame of the Villa la Californie on 22 Costebelle Avenue does not lie so much in the architectural importance, but the name rings bells for all art lovers. Built in 1920 for the Consul of France in Moscow and his family, this building served Picasso for 6 years as his inspirational base, where he painted his famous view over the bay.
The vicinity of Cannes also features many prominent and unique buildings, worth visiting, such as, Palais Bulles. Resembling a close-up of Mars, and designed by renowned architect Antti Lovag, this building was bought by the fashion designer Pierre Cardin.
After exploring the bleached Mediterranean streets, cafes and beaches, our private Cannes guide is there to take you to your next adventure and show you the nearby city of Antibes!
Once you arrive in Antibes, your guided tour takes you to the remains of the town’s ancient legacy- the Roman Aqueduct. And in stark contrast to the ancient ruins you are invited to Antibes` treasure-the unparalleled Picasso collection. Picasso himself spent several months here painting, and upon his departure donated a number of works to the city. Antibes is also known for its gardens, roses in particular. It is quite common to find in the city parks lined with dramatic and lush rows of roses.
Instead of Antibes, our private guides can also take you to Nice or Monaco! When in Côte d'Azur , take our private Cannes city tour, and explore its glitz and glamor with style, or use the opportunity to visit Monaco, Nice and Antibes!
