Cordoba is the birthplace of one of the greatest Jewish thinkers of all time, the physician and philosopher Moses Maimonides (1135 - 1204). He is honored today by a life size statue in the town square, reminding visitors that this was once the unparalleled center of Jewish scholarship in the world. Though founded as an Iberian and Roman city in ancient times, during the Middle Ages it became the capital of a tolerant Islamic caliphate that accepted its Christian and Jewish minorities. Universities thrived throughout the city and in the 10th century it is estimated that Cordoba was the most populous city in the world.
Alongside its world-renowned examples of splendid Moorish buildings dating from the Islamic era, Cordoba also boasts a rich Jewish history. Its Sephardic community was once legendary and renowned. The intellectual preeminence in the Jewish Mediterranean world was undoubtedly in part due to the achievements of Hasdai Ibn Shaprut (915-970). A doctor, diplomat and scholar, Hasdai served in the courts of several Caliphs. The Cordoba Jewish community of Hasdai’s time, situated near the alcazar (fortress), was wealthy and vibrant. After the city was re-conquored by the Christians, many families left and took their keys with them, many families have kept them to this day. They also took the medieval Judeo-Spanish dialect Ladino with them as they spread across the world.
