Jewish Livorno tour
4 hour walking tour
Your excursion begins at the port, followed by the Synagogue of Livorno – a splendid example of religious architecture inspired by the rationalist style, with a sharp, grey
exterior existing in contrast to the bright and welcoming space inside. Opened on October 23, 1962, it rises on the ruins of the ancient synagogue which was destroyed by bombings during
WWII.
Continue on to the colorful Vettovaglie Market, where aromas and flavors are sure to delight. Here you will find products, now typical in Livorno, which were originally
introduced by Sephardic Jews: cod, melanzane sotto il pesto, cous cous, and roschette, to name a few. A Kosher butcher is also located in the center of the market.
From the rear exit of the market, you will come across the Modigliani route, which is marked by a series of bronze tiles bearing the signature of this great artist, by far the
most famous Livornese Jew to have ever lived. Following these tiles will lead to the birthplace of Amedeo Modigliani at via Roma 38, where his former family home, now organized
as a museum, retraces the artistic and personal development of this spectacular talent.
Your next stop is Museo Yeshiva Marini. Situated in the former private synagogue of the Marini family’s home (a family of prominent Jewish merchants,) this Jewish Museum was
opened in 1930 and was the first of its kind in Livorno. It retains synagogue worship items which were recovered from the city’s former ancient synagogue.
Conclude your tour with a visit to the monumental cemetery of Viale Ippolito Nievo, located outside the city center. Active from 1840 to 1900, the grounds extend over a vast area
of 16,000 square meters and are home to some 4,000 burials. About 30 rabbis – include Koriat, Costa, Alvarenga, and Benamozegh – have been laid to rest here.
Many members of Modigliani’s family are buried here, and a number of other prominent Livorno families can be pointed out as well. You will then be accompanied back to the port.
