Formerly known as Bombay, Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. With 20 million people, Mumbai is the sixth most populous city in the world. Home to striking architecture, it has the largest number of skyscrapers in India and a vast number of spectacular Art Deco buildings.
Mumbai is home to the Bene Israel and Baghdadi Jewish communities. The Bene Israel arrived here 2100 years ago. For generations they lived as a distinct endogamous group in rural villages, observing the Sabbath, circumcising their male children and celebrating Jewish holidays related to the Bible. The Baghdadi Jews were successful merchants who remained attached to the teaching and tradition of Baghdad. The city now has a community of nearly 5,000. During your tour with us, we will explore the community’s fascinating history as well as introduce you to present-day life here.
Your tour will take you to three of the synagogues, the Kenesth Eliyahoo, the Magen David and the Tiphereth Israel, with their magnificent architectural styles taken from different parts of the world. We will also visit the Sassoon docks, and Sassoon Library. We will also explore the magnificence of this city as a whole at sites such as the “Gateway of India,” a majestic arch facing out to Mumbai Harbor.
