Private Jewish City-Tours Nice

Tour available in:

Nice the Beautiful

Nice, one of the oldest human settlements in the world, is named after the Greek goddess of victory, Nike. Home of the Marc Chagall Museum and gateway to the French Riviera, “Nissa la Belle” or “Nice the Beautiful” is a must-see destination on the Mediterranean. Nice was alternately part of Italy, Provence and France, historical variations that impacted on the Jewish community as well. In 1342, the Jews of Nice were made to wear a distinguishing “badge”. In 1647 the city became home to the Marranos of Portuguese origin, attracted here by the free port. At times confined to a ghetto, at others living throughout the city, the Jews of Nice developed their own language, Judéo-Niçois, a combination of the local French dialect and Hebrew. During WWII Nice was incorporated into Italy and became a place of refuge for Jews. This ended brutally with the German takeover in 1943. In the postwar era, Nice welcomed Jews from North Africa. Nowadays’ community is served by two main synagogues (Ashkenazi and Sephardi) and a plethora of community services. Enjoy lunch at Le Leviathan, explore the artistically valuable Chagall Museum, stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and experience general and Jewish Nice in all its beauty!

Nice is also one of our many port destinations. If you plan to come to your guided tour(s) by cruise ship, we would be more than happy to arrange for your transfer and arrival!
