Taste of Paris
La Tour Eiffel, les Champs Élysées, la vie en rose – mere mention of the French capital conjures images of beauty and romance, magic and love. Enlightenment, Art Nouveau and Cubism; Sartre, Renoir, the Louvre; Haute-Couture and fine dining. No other city on earth captures the imagination quite like Paris--the most visited city on the planet!
A big part of the appeal is the city’s rich history and Jews have played an integral role in this history for over 2,000 years. The “Marais” district on the Right Bank of the Seine River has long been a Jewish neighborhood. With its combination of magnificent buildings, kosher shops and upscale galleries, it is the heart of Jewish Paris. From a tiny Ashkenazi stiebl to the Grande Synagogue de la Victoire, Jewish history can be found on every corner of this city with its “old world” charm. This is also the city of the infamous “Dreyfus Trial” which gave rise to Theodor Herzl’s impassioned plea for a Jewish homeland. As the former capital of Vichy France, it keenly remembers the Holocaust through various sites: the Memorial to the Deportation, the Memorial of the Shoah, and the Street of the Righteous.
As Europe’s largest Jewish community, contemporary Jewish Paris has much to offer: synagogues, kosher delis, cultural centers and falafel shops. Now as then, the rue des Rosiers and the Pletlz (Yiddish for “little place”) remain the center of local Jewish life – not to mention a hotbed of international creativity. Visit the Museum of Jewish Art and History housed in a gorgeous, sprawling 17th century mansion. Hear about Sarah Bernhardt, “the most famous actress the world has ever known” or the expat Gertrude Stein with her Picasso collection and her intellectual salons. Admire the impressive Art Nouveau synagogue designed by Hector Guimard, famous for his Paris Metro stations. Explore the cobbled side streets and experience that famous Parisian joie de vivre in true Milk & Honey Tours style.
