The tour begins with the ruins of Klaipeda Castle, built by Teutonic Knights in 1252. Although it has suffered major destruction throughout centuries of wars, some fortification walls and cellars survived and other parts have been reconstructed. Enjoy a panoramic view of the city from one of the Castle’s Towers, and afterwards go and explore Old Town, where the strong German cultural influence is still visible.
Once there, you will walk from the central point of Klaipeda – Drama Theatre Square, with a symbol of the city , to the famous monument to Taravos Anike (Annchen von Tharau), a character from popular German folk song. As you wander the narrow streets of Old Town, admire their traditional 18th century style, and pass by many old houses and historical buildings: Upper street, Bakers’ and John streets, Blacksmiths’ and Fishers’ streets, and the Passage of Friedrich.
At the dock of the river Dane you will see the striking symbol of Klaipeda: the educational vessel Meridian. The Jewish part of the tour includes visit to SINAGOGŲ GATVĖ (the streets of Synagogues), the building of the local Jewish Community and the remaining of the former Jewish Cemetery. Depending on availability, there is the possibility to schedule a meeting with the members of the local Jewish Community.
